Engelbrektsloppet is named after the local freedom hero Engelbrekt Engelbrektson, who in the 15th century fought against the Danes who occupied parts of Sweden.

Since the start of the Engelbrektsloppet in 1969, the race has grown to become the second largest in Sweden after Vasaloppet. During the long history of the race, much has changed and developed, for example, artificial snow is now crucial for conducting ski races.
